This 4-week advanced ceramic design course is a continuation of our  Foundations Ceramic Design Course and  is designed for former participants or intermediate clay crafters who want to deepen their relationship with clay through a more sculptural, intuitive, and experimental approach.

Blending technical and intuitive methodologies, Ceramic Design Course II draws inspiration from drawing, painting, wood carving, and contemporary ceramic practices. Through practical exercises and creative exploration, participants will develop expressive ceramic forms while expanding their personal approach to clay.

Working with coiling, slab-building, pinching, carving, and sculptural construction techniques, we will explore texture, surface, colour, rhythm, and form through a balance of structure and experimentation.

The sessions of this course are 3 hours long instead of 2,5 hours ⎯  conceived to develop more complex pieces, and further refine your own visual language through clay & glaze.

4 Group Classes:

DAY 1 - Form & Construction. Introduction to sculptural handbuilding techniques and approaches to working intuitively with clay. We will explore coiling, pinching, slab-building, and methods for constructing expressive forms while focusing on balance, proportion, and structural understanding.

DAY 2 - Texture, Surface & Mark Making. A day dedicated to surface exploration and material expression. Using inspiration from drawing, painting, and carving practices, participants will experiment with texture, layering, carving, slips, oxides, and mark-making techniques to develop more dynamic ceramic surfaces.

DAY 3 - Scale, Composition & Sculptural Thinking. Focusing on larger forms and sculptural composition, we will explore methods for building bigger, bolder ceramic pieces with confidence and care. Participants will receive individual guidance while developing personal projects and experimenting with different creative methodologies. (Pieces made can scale up to 30-40 cm high in limitation with the kiln space.)

DAY 4 - Colour, Finishing & Personal Direction. The final session focuses on finishing techniques, colour exploration, glazing approaches, and refining individual works. Together, we will reflect on process, experimentation, and ways to continue developing a personal artistic language through clay.

On top of that, each of the participants will be offered:

  • Individual guidance and one-on-one feedback throughout the course

  • Practical advice for building larger and more complex ceramic forms

  • A playful and supportive studio environment focused on experimentation and discovery

  • References to contemporary ceramic, sculptural, and cross-disciplinary artistic practices

  • Space to develop personal ideas, processes, and creative direction through clay

Together, we will shape, carve, build, and experiment — bringing ideas to life through clay with intuition, care, and a spirit of exploration.

Viviane Tabach works in the areas of curatorship, art education, and fine arts, she is currently a guest professor at Universität der Künste BerlinShe founded ceramic brand Lebú in 2014 and ran her own workshop and art space in São Paolo, Brasil. As a ceramics teacher with many years of experience, in her classes she seeks to collectively investigate the experience of hand-building with clay. The contact with clay for her is as a way to connect with nature, negotiation between intention and intuition in shaping, observation of the contrast between our rhythm and the clay's pace.
