FOUNDATIONS – 4 WEEK CERAMIC DESIGN COURSE
Learn practical and theoretical principles of ceramics with us in a fun, hands-on way. Complete beginners are welcome.
ABOUT THE COURSE
Our Ceramic Design Course gives you a solid introduction to the core ceramic techniques and materials, while giving you plenty of space to experiment, make and develop your own ideas.
Learn an ancient craft while discovering ways to integrate ceramics into contemporary design fields — from jewellery and tableware to interior objects, sculpture and art pieces.
Over four sessions, we explore different approaches to hand-building, slab-building, sculpture, surfaces and glazing.
You will normally create around 3–4 ceramic pieces throughout the course and receive guidance to develop your own projects.
DAY 1 – HANDBUILDING & CERAMIC DESIGN
We begin with the foundations of working with clay. You will learn about different clay types, preparation, drying and firing stages, and essential hand-building techniques. After the introduction, we move directly into practice and begin developing your first ceramic piece.
DAY 2 – SLAB-BUILDING
During the second session, we explore slab-building — a versatile technique for creating ceramic vessels, architectural forms and design objects. You will learn how to prepare slabs, connect pieces correctly and construct your own forms.
DAY 3 – SCULPTURE
Ceramics can move beyond functional objects into sculptural forms. During this class, we explore volume, construction and three-dimensional expression, allowing you to experiment more freely with clay as a creative medium.
DAY 4 – RAW GLAZING, TEXTURES, NATURAL GLAZES & ENGOBES
The final session is dedicated to ceramic surfaces. We explore colour, gloss, texture, engobes, raw glazing and natural glazing possibilities, learning how different materials transform during the firing process.
About the Teacher:

VIVIANE TABACH
Viviane Tabach works in the areas of curatorship, art education, and fine arts. She is currently a guest professor at Universität der Künste Berlin . She founded ceramic brand Lebü in 2014 and ran her own workshop and art space in São Paulo, Brazil.
As a ceramics teacher with many years of experience, in her classes she seeks to collectively investigate the experience of hand-building with clay. The contact with clay for her is a way to connect with nature, negotiating between intention and intuition in shaping, and observing the contrast between our rhythm and the clay's pace.
